The texturing process is one of my favourites, but long and hard... One of the things that is important before texturing, is to have the light and reflection setup done. Sometimes good materials don't look good because of the environment setup. Reflection is very important here, and you have to be sure that objects have something to reflect.The look of the materials depends of that, and i always do that before starting. Normally i work on textures from scratch, i mean, i don't reuse them. Each object is different, and i do all maps according to the look, and scene. Taking care of the color, saturation,etc... The materials are vray mats. Except if i need one self-iluminated one, that i use standard mat. First i think of the diffuse map, the overall look. I build that map from many references, and stuff...and all that information is useful to the other maps, reflection, bump, etc...
